Sand Pyramids

In Foča, Kultura, Posjete by Foča

In the village Danicici on the spot called Pirni Do, nearby Foca, there are Sand Pyramids presenting the unique natural phenomenon in this area.
By soil erosion, after long years the pyramids have emerged as a result of frosts, summer heat, rain and strong winds. Called Sand Pyramids, although no pyramidal shape, striated sand pillars rising from their board foundations and then narrow toward the top presenting an extraordinary geomorphological rarity in these areas.
It is not certain how old they are, and according to the travel writer and geographer Dragutin Deroko they are at least 200 years old. This erosion continues today, so that they do not disappear, but grow.
Appearance of the Sand Pyramids in Foca reminds to Devil’s Town near Kursumlija, especially since experts say that this is the same kind of erosion on a similar clay soil. Many travelers consider they are better than the pyramids in Colorado.
It is an interesting fact that Austro-Hungary changed the direction of the route to preserve them and it seems that the Sand Pyramids in middle of the last century was more famous, because some parts of the movie “Kapetan Leši” and “Vinetu” were filmed at this site.
